Tips on Reinforcing Your Roof Before A Hurricane/Storm

When it comes to living in Florida storms are an extremely common occurrence, this year we've had record hurricanes that have caused extreme damage throughout the state.  Roofs are a commonly damaged component of a house during hurricanes and other strong storms, luckily there are some things that you can do to reinforce and protect your roof prior to a storm. Today Timberman Roofing will be discussing ways to reinforce and secure your roof.  Have questions? Think you may need a free roof inspection and estimate? Schedule A Professional Inspection Of Your Roof

As we just mentioned above, our Florida Panhandle roofing company proudly offers free inspections and estimates for any of your roofing needs.  Getting your roof inspected before a storm can be important to check for missing or damaged shingles, leaks cracks or gaps in the surface of your roof, damage to your flashing, or even loose or cracked tiles.  Locating and addressing these kinds of issues prior to a storm can help to ensure further damage is not caused.

Clean Your Rain Gutters

We often receive calls from home and business owners in the Florida Panhandle who have Rain gutter systems installed But do not properly maintain them. Rain gutters are meant to move water off of your roof and away from your home, when they are not properly cleaned and maintained water can actually build up, causing damage, leaks, and other issues. Foundation issues can also occur when water pulls near the home.

Install Hurricane Clips/Straps

If you live in a home or own a business in the Florida Panhandle that was built before the latest hurricane codes were updated, you may not have hurricane straps or clips.  Hurricane clips and straps can help to reinforce the connection between the roof and walls of your home making it more resistant to high winds that can occur during storms or hurricanes. Uplift can be common once winds reach certain speeds and this can help to reduce the risk.

Maintain The Trees Around Your Roof

Trees are a common thing that can cause damage to the roof of your home or business during a storm that people often neglect to address.  Even smaller tree limbs/branches can cause significant damage when broken off onto your roof. Before any storms or hurricanes come, we recommend making sure that your trees are properly trimmed.

Make Needed Roof Repairs

During your inspection, any necessary repairs will be pointed out and quoted. We highly recommend addressing any of these repairs that have been pointed out to ensure that further damage or new damage does not occur due to it. In some cases, if repairs cannot be made prior to the storm, a tarp can be used to provide an extra seal.

Secure Loose Roofing Components

Although this technically falls under the “make needed a roof repair section”, we think it is important to point out. Flashing along with equipment such as satellite dishes, solar panels, etc. should be secured. Flashing is typically placed around chimneys, skylights, vents, etc., and is very important for keeping water out. Solar panels, satellite dishes, and other equipment that is not secured properly could cause roof damage or even become flying debris.
